Write about your first name: its meaning, significance, etymology, etc.

I was the youngest in my family and I had 2 older sisters whose names were Valda and Beris.

When I came into the world my Mother said there was quite an argument about what I would be named but thankfully she won and I was called Marilyn!

My Father wanted to call me Marion and my Grandfather thought Madeline sounded a pretty name. Mum said because I was born with some disabilities she wanted me to have a name which sounded pretty and she didn’t want people making fun of me or my name.

The name Marilyn is made  up of two other names Mary and Lynn and even though I was the only Marilyn in a school of 600 pupils in the early 1960’s, by the time I left school and entered the workforce I discovered it was quite a common name.

The name has British, Welsh and Hebrew origins and has been a popular name in America since the 1920-60′ s.

If people struggled with my name I would say..you know Marilyn Monroe the famous actress! They would then ask if I was related and I fired back with a big NO!

Over recent years when I go to a Cafe to buy food and they ask my name I say Gail….which is my second name because it is a simple name that people cannot get wrong,,, instead of the employee coming out and yelling out the wrong name for the customer… Mary…Margaret.. Maree..Marie.. Melenie..Merrilee Marlene???

Yes I’ve heard them all but Gail..well that’s easy no one ever gets that wrong!!

Over and out..

From MARILYN GAIL
