Jobs.. or careers..

What jobs have you had?

First, there was the dream that came after I found out that as a youngster reading books was fun and a time-consumer or a time waster! I just loved to read…

Then I discovered there was a place in town called a library where one could either sit quietly and read a book or borrow a book or two for a period of time to read at home.

I told the library staff that when I leave school, I’m going to get a job here….sorting books…moving them from place to place…helping people find a good book to read!

Sadly, like a lot of my growing up years, the library staff peered over the top of their glasses and got down to my level and whispered those words that my father and the teachers had said….” You’re not good enough… you’re not smart enough… you’re never going to get a job here! And besides that, you look  like the lazy type that would just want to read all day and not do any work!”

So when one is shunted and shoved into a corner my dream job never eventuated.

I did a lot if mundane things like working on a farm teaching poddy calves how to drink milk from a bucket…

I took on clerical jobs that just didn’t cut it with me..

I still read books and took up another pastime travelling …but never pushed the idea I would ever be employed doing what my heart desired.

Eventually I found my way into working at a large Department store that sold everything..Yes I mean everything from fashion to hardware to every item one would need in a house and that included books!

It took me nearly 10 years to fumble my way through the Cafe ..washing dishes..slapping food on a plate making coffee …even working the cash registers taking people’s money! Responsibilities yes they came my way but each day as I walked through each department, I would pause at the Book area, then walk away.

I was demoted to the Shoe department when the Cafe closed and muddled my way through working in Women’s lingerie area and then clothing and hats.

One day I heard of an opening to work in the Book dept and I got an interview.
