It has been a lifelong dream of mine to be a successful writer.
I’ve had no formal training, although I don’t believe one needs education just to string a few words together that others will find informative or amusing.
When I was ten years old, I put my name in our local farming community paper on a pen pal list. The result of that small step forward probably spurned my idea to become a writer.
A girl who lived some 250 miles away was the first to respond and we happily wrote to each other regularly.
My name was also put on an overseas list, and I received letters from Canada, New Zealand and Malaysia, as well as other states of Australia.
This was in the days before the internet or mobile phones most homes had a television I believe for entertainment but my version of entertainment was writing aerogram letters to my new found friends across the world. At one stage I had 13 penfriends.
I was certainly busy keeping up with my schoolwork as well as replying to the penpal mail.
It was an interesting way to learn about different areas of the world. We exchanged photos and birthday greeting cards, and I received my first Valentine’s Day card ever from a young man in Canada. No one in my school had ever seen a Valentine’s Day card so it made me feel a little special.
Most of the children ceased the idea of communication when they left school and went on to college or university.
I guess I moved on to and chose other directions and entertainment in life.
One person I corresponded with was going to visit our country some 40 years later, and she found me through the internet, and we were able to continue the friendship again. She has visited me twice. Of course, we communicate via modern technology now…Not sitting up all hours of the night writing longhand letters or typing them up on the manual typewriter.
So when people say where did your understand in writing stem from I can share my story
